I owned the earlier edition of this book and liked it.įor those not into RPG's or LotR collecting, it is a good choice for cartographers and map fans.įonstad did an excellent job on creating the maps using a variety of sources, and she based the scale on the information provided in the different Tolkien books. She has brought a dimension to Tolkien which I can only drool over. ABOUT THIS BOOK: Unquestionably the most detailed and meticulously researched Tolkien atlas ever prepared, with separate two color maps lovingly executed by a professional cartographer and Tolkien scholar and accompanied by detailed notes relating features on the maps to the appropriate references from Tolkien's works. I recommend getting the latest edition because it adds stuff that was not in the original edition. Karen Wynn Fonstad was a professional cartographer and it certainly shows in this truly magnificent atlas which could potentially have been called Atlas of Ëa although she does actually focus most of her excellent geographical scholastic skills on Middle Earth. It is also good for someone who collects LotR products.

This book is good for anyone who wants to role play in Middle-earth as the information covers the main areas of the Hobbit and LotR. The maps can be easily adapted for other settings (future, present, past, fantasy, and medieval. While I did not always agree with her maps, I found them to be a good starting for adventures using Rolemaster, MERP, C&S, and any other RPG.įonstad's maps for the Land, Pern, and other settings are good accesories for people who play one of those RPG's, but also for any other RPG setting. I liked the way the maps and schematics were designed. I chose this product because I am a big fan of Lord of the Rings.
